All information falls under the latest revision for the EMS Protocols: 11-15-2018
Chief Orlando Dominguez was contacted by a representative with JACHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) to assist Israel’s Ministry of Health with improving their EMS System. On Wednesday July 10th, the Office of EMS with Dispatch, met via conference call with the JACHO Rep. and the Israel Ministry of Health to answer a series of questions they had regarding how our EMS Operations, Administration, & 911 System functions. We were more than happy to provide guidance to our neighbors and look forward to working with them in the future.

On Wednesday, July 10th with the help of Dispatch & the Rescue 48 C shift crew (FM Casey Baker & FM Patrick Fenimore), the Office of EMS assisted the Viera VA Outpatient Clinic with a Surgical/Procedural Complications Drill.

Drill Scenario
  • Patient is in the Operating Room
  • 75-year-old male is having a TRUS Biopsy for elevated PSA.
  • PMH: TIA, elevated PSA and chronic low back pain.
  • Meds: Aspirin therapy one a day for stroke prophylaxis. Stopped one week before procedure.
  • Ibuprofen 800mg prn for chronic low back pain. Stopped one week before procedure.
  • Patient was taken to the OR and had a routine TRUS biopsy without issue. Was taken to the PACU, and 20 minutes after arrival RN found “lots” of blood in the bed and Patient said he was feeling nauseous. Systolic BP was 70mmhg. When the nurse told the patient there was much blood in the bed he stated, “could it have been all the Goodies powder I have been using lately for my low back pain.”
  • Next BP reading was 60mmhg.
  • Urologist was concerned about large amount unseen blood in the rectum.
  • EMS was called.
Thank you Dispatch and R48 Crew for your participation!

Treating a Shark Bite

Shark Week is approaching and it instills fear in those who watch the week-long television event unfold on the Discovery Channel, but maybe it shouldn't: according to the International Shark Attack File, there have been a total of 66 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide in 2018, and of those, only 4 resulted in death. These aren't exactly grim statistics, but when you see a shadow lurking below you in the ocean, knowing how to react just might save your life! Follow the link below to read more.
